Welcome to the Age of Scrolling: A Reflection on Social Media, Business, and Purpose
Social media, particularly the endless scrolling on mobile phones, hasn’t made the world better. It hasn’t fostered stronger communities, healthier minds, or smarter conversations. If anything, it’s left us more distracted, less engaged, and increasingly disconnected.
But let’s be honest there is one thing it’s done exceptionally well: it’s transformed how businesses find and target customers. For business owners, it’s a goldmine. Affordable ads, targeted impressions, and measurable ROI have made growing a brand more accessible than ever.
Yet, this model comes at a cost.
Mental health? Deteriorating.
Education? Shortchanged.
Professionalism and workplace focus? Eroding.
Attention spans? Nonexistent.
We signed up for “community.” Instead, we got sensationalism. Scrolling. Hating. Consuming. Welcome to the era of American Idiocracy.
But here’s the thing I believe there’s power in how we use these platforms. The very least I can do is help others see that their phone can make them money, not just drain their time and energy. It can be a tool for growth, not just a source of endless distraction.
If you’re a worker, consider this: consulting a business that needs to reach customers is a far more fulfilling path than driving for Uber or delivering for DoorDash. Why? Because transactional gigs often leave workers burned out, unappreciated, and stuck in a cycle that doesn’t lead to anything bigger.
Next time you see an Uber or DoorDash interaction, observe closely.
Does the worker seem happy?
Does the consumer treat them with respect?
Does it feel like a meaningful exchange or just another transaction?
Now compare that to a B2B consultation between a marketing consultant and a business owner. There’s purpose. Collaboration. Growth.
If you’re spending hours on your phone, scrolling your life away, think about this: that same device could be the tool that builds your future. Use it to create, connect, and consult. Don’t just let it drain your time let it fuel your purpose.
Let’s rethink how we use this technology. Let’s make our time and our work matter.
